Amazing Spiderman #651
This issue was the conclusion of Dan Slott's first Big Time arc and it did not disappoint. We open with the Hobgoblin telling the Kingpin about the Black Cat and Spidey arriving at the Fisk Building. Cut to Cat and Spidey, with Webs using his new suit to beat up some Hand ninjas. Cat goes on her own to Fisk's penthouse, not expecting anyone there while Spidey, upset at Cat, continues to find the stolen reverbium. Hobby and Spidey fight, with Webs having to change the frequency on his costume thanks to the Goblin. While that is happening, Cat is in trouble with Montana and Fisk and trying to reach Spiderman for help. However, since he changed his suit, he cannot hear her and continues to fight the Hobgoblin. Hobby gets the reverbium to the point of self destruction and, after Spidey destroys it, the building starts to give way. Cat, in a lot of trouble with Fisk, gets saved by the Web-slinger when Fisk knocks a support column over and falls through the floor. Hobgoblin catches Fisk but Montana doesn't make it. Later, Hobby has the Tinkerer repair his gadgets, Phil aka Hobgoblin asks Norah Winters on a date, and Aunt May is uber proud of Peter.
This story was absolutely phenominal. The art, both in the main story and the Scorpion back up story, were amazing and Dan Slott delievered a grade A script. This is probably my favorite Spider-man issue to date. I was blown away by Humberto Ramos' art, who has now jumped up into my top three favorite artists, just behind Marcos Martin and David Lafuente. And I have to give Dan Slott big props. If Spider-man is going to be this well written, I will continue to buy this book. This issue gave a preview of next issue, with Mac Gargan returning as the Scorpion and Stefano Caselli's art. Stefano's art looks really good and I can't wait for this arc to begin.
Story- 6/5
Art- 6/5
Overall- 12/10. Great arc, great conclusion, great beginning of Big Time.
Avengers #8
Well, this was a sub-par issue. It begins with Tony Stark gathering the Illuminati- a secret organization of the world's most powerful heroes. The original intent of the group was to mold/shape the status of the superhero world. That didn't go so well and they were outed and the group disbanded. The group, made up of Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Namor, Mr. Fantastic, Professor X, and Medusa (taking over for her deceased hubby Black Bolt) talk about the Infinity Gems. Stark tells the group what the Red Hulk told the Avengers when he crashed into Avengers Tower. Rulk tells the group about a man (Parker Robbins aka the Hood) putting a beating on him. The Illuminati travel to Attilan, the former home of the Inhumans (?) and, after discovering that the Red Gem is gone, they discover that Steve Rodgers has gathered the New, Secret, and main Avengers to meet the Illuminati, with Steve asking "Tony, what are you doing?"
This issue was just an okay issue. The story, despite being a lead in issue, is not grabbing my attention at all. The art of John Romita Jr. was the saving grace. Once upon a time, I was considering dropping New Avengers because Stuart Immonen was leaving and the story was kinda bland. But now, I'm considering dropping Avengers just because the story is going no where. I'll finish out this arc and then decide if I'm going to continue buying the book.
Story-2/5
Art-4/5
Overall-6/10
Other News
The new Spiderman suit was shown today, and I must say, its not that bad.
However, I must see the mask and the full, non-battle tested suit for my full opinion. Yet, with the addition of the web shooters, I can already tell that this reboot will be a success. And, one more thing, I love Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. She will probably be one of my favorite things about this movie.
Pat Shurmur was hired as the Cleveland Browns next head coach. Sadly, I was not hired as the head coach or the offensive coordinator. Oh well. I hope Shurmur can actually do something with the Browns. I trust Holmgren and his decisions, but this one is kinda questionable. Oh, and Cleveland, please draft either A.J. Green or Julio Jones in the draft. We need a WR soooooo bad.
Mkay. All done for this post. I haven't watched V yet. But when I do, I'll review that along with the new Tosh.O and talk about my hopes for the second half of the final season of Smallville. That will come either tomorrow or Saturday. Until then...
Peace
